I was sitting in my college bus reading the autobiography of Bapu titled “My experiments with truths.” The journey was about one and a half hour from my home and I always preferred to read storybooks rather than chit-chat with my friends during the morning session of my journey. I was actually running in short of novels. So I preferred an autobiography that morning. While I was in half of my journey, a friend of mine named Vivek has entered the bus and sat just beside me.
He took a look at the cover of my book and said “Why would you read an autobiography of a man who had destructed India's Independence my friend?” I really did not get his statement. I never understood the meaning in his statement so I asked again why he uttered so. He replied to my question, saying “Gandhi was a fool who ran a dagger of peace before a gun from the British.” He continued saying “He made many freedom fighters die for his cause and he was nothing but a man of no assets.”
I was really shocked by the way he was conveying his view to the father of the realm. He was completely filled with idiotic sense and admiration was out of his question. I said, “Why would you say so? He brought us Independence by the best means”. He replied immediately saying “That was nothing. He made our Independence late for at least 20 years”. I was running out of words to argue as he was pointing at every aspect of the man in the worst way possible. I said to him, “You are misguided my friend. Gandhi had brought us freedom in the best possible way. No one else would have in reality done it much better. He was as good in his endeavours that the whole Bharat called him Bapu (father).
Peace is the best path that Gandhi had elected to fight and for your statement, I would like to correct it as not a dagger rather it was a sword of almighty. It is not one might to question such a personality with our imposed and indistinct views”. My friend kept silent for a moment and then continued “Peace is the only side left for a weak man. For an instance, if all of India would fight against the British how could they be resisting it? They would have left India a long time ago. Later, who was Gandhi to permit hanging another freedom fighter?”
I replied saying “Every word of your question has got a deep answer in his life. Why would a true follower of peace accept hanging of freedom fighter unless the crime committed is not bearable and later as you said if Gandhi would make the whole of India make a war? Who knows you and I may not have been possible. My friend, what you are telling is because of your lack of knowledge regarding this personality.
I prefer that you read his autobiography and learn why he is honored so much in society. Even though billions of people honor a person and we don't, I would be saying it is our fault but not of society”.
My friend at last said one thing I would have at mostly expected “Keep your opinion with you I would never listen to it as it is truly worthless. This man was a fool. You are blind to understand it”. We reached the stop and all I understood from the conversation is that people have already an imposed opinion, which draws a conclusion, but for sure the next time he insults. Bapu, I would not stop beating him by my shoe as I said we are who to question a man of peace.
